The first pilot project was designed to help set up a new understanding about waging peace with the younger generation. Children were trained and had the opportunity to discuss different topics such as the root cause(s) of conflict, HIV/AIDS, or human rights.
At the end of this pilot the children wanted to start their own project. They chose to initiate a program supporting younger children who are HIV positive. This project has been operational for almost two months (as of August 2017). As part of the program children receive school fees, were given a goat to help take care of, and meet twice a month to eat and have fun as they sing and pray together. Timothy Musaasizi Ziwa is the Adult Supporter of our first Young Peacebuilders Club in West Uganda which is called Mubende Peace For All Club (MUPEFA). The club motto is ‘Give Peace and Get Peace.’ This is a group of 10 amazing young peacebuilders who all have various roles in the Club and meet weekly to discuss barriers to peace and ways of promoting peace among themselves, their families and communities. Their most recent YP Club project, with the theme of ‘Promoting Peace Through Promoting Good Health,’ is based on a study they conducted in their community where they found that many children were suffering from HIV/AIDS transmitted from their parents at birth and others were orphans because their parents died of AIDS. This dedicated group of young people then decided to start up a project where they support and care for 10 children affected by AIDS in their community, 5 of whom are living with HIV/AIDS while the rest have been orphaned due to the virus. Their project involves providing those affected with clothing, food and helping them with their school fees and materials for school. The YP Club members have also started a counselling and guidance programme to help them fight the stigma associated with the virus.
